There was a time in my life when all I wanted was to be a chemist. I think a lot of kids go through the mad scientist phase, dreaming of mixing various solutions into smoking cauldrons, practicing this logical dance of ions and precipitates and balanced equations. But then I took Chemistry in high school and almost failed it, so I had to find something else to do.
Luckily, I found writing, which was not exactly unlike chemistry when you broke it down. You can’t just throw characters and plot together and hope that they’ll work themselves out. (Believe me, I’ve tried.) There’s an underlying mechanism to the art of fiction, sometimes delicate, always wondrous, and in the end, as brilliantly simple and beautiful as the hydrogen atom.
String a bunch of atoms together, and a molecule is formed. Cluster those molecules together, and a flower blooms. I started off with a single word and ended up with my first novel, Everything Asian. From nothing to something – if that’s not magic, I don’t know what is.
