First and foremost, before I am Korean, American, or any other, I am Christian. My name is not one that my parents gave me rather it is a nickname my first Korean American friend gave me because that is what I am. Sunny.
Though I was originally born in Seoul South Korea, I have lived more than half of my life elsewhere – Frankfurt Germany, Strasbourg France, Anaheim California, Ramsey New Jersey, Syracuse New York, and Rockville Maryland. Still at this age, I am skeptical to categorize myself as a Korean-AMERICAN because I have only been living here in the U.S. for 9 years one of which was spent in France. At first glance, yes, I am Asian BUT, as a store clerk in a Parisian department store (having heard me speak a mixture of English, Korean, French and German all in one phone conversation with my cousin) once said, “You are international, yes?” YES. INDEED.
Other than my affection for travel and languages I like to eat and cook. Not bake. Friends have characterized me as the eternal diva who knows what she likes and a passionate free spirit. Korean food is my favorite of all foods I have tried, I enjoy complete silence after a hectic day out, I love writing letters – yes, those things you physically write with a pen and paper, all kinds of music makes me happy, I like to go to the same places over and over again as much as I like to find new places to go to, and love the little things in life. People fascinate me (children included) and I have recently come to realize that I am only shy in situations I really shouldn’t be. I love watching ESPN and jumping on the couch or hitting the person sitting next to me when I get excited about an interception in football or a missed free throw by an opposing basketball team. I ski, snowboard, speed skate, swim, hike, surf, ride horseback, play the clarinet, and play the cello.
