Own Words

Hello!

My name is Mica (/maɪka/ in IPA). I’m named after a mineral.

I like this photo of me because it looks like I have strong legs and big Korean calves.

I was adopted when I was three months old, the same weekend that the Statue of Liberty was reopened to the public.

In March, I passed my MA exam in French linguistics. Wheee!

In October 2009, I ran the Chicago Marathon (my first). Somewhere between Miles 20 and 26.2, a spectator handed me a Twizzler and yelled, “Good job, yellow!” I was really offended, until I remembered that I was wearing a bright yellow shirt.

Then I got passed by a one-legged man on crutches.

When I’m not running or complaining about grad school, I like to bake, especially high-calorie things. I just made cinnamon rolls (from scratch!) for the first time, so I’m pretty pleased with myself.

Here, I will share one of my grandma’s recipes with you. It is called “Better than Sex” cake, but there is the PG option, “Better than Anything” cake:

“Better than Sex/Anything Cake”

Ingredients:
-One box chocolate cake mix
-Eggs/Oil/Water, as called for by the cake mix
-14-oz jar sweetened condensed milk
-12-oz jar butterscotch/caramel ice cream topping
-8-oz container of extra-creamy whipped topping
-Two Nestlé Crunch bars

Directions:
1. Bake the cake in a 9″x13″ pan, per the directions on the box.
2. When the cake is still warm, poke it liberally with chopsticks, making holes all over.
3. Pour sweetened condensed milk and butterscotch topping onto the cake. (You can microwave the butterscotch topping to make it more pour-able.)
4. Cool and let the toppings soak in. (I refrigerated mine. Some recipes say to refrigerate overnight.)
5. Cover with whipped topping and crushed candy bars.

(N.B. In Step 2, make sure to use something chopstick-size or larger. I tried toothpicks, and the holes were not sufficiently large for the topping to seep through. I ended up having to re-melt it with my hair-dryer, which was ridiculous.)

I have a blog. It’s not really about anything in particular. I’d love for you to visit: http://micapie.blogspot.com/
