I am a Korean-American and I’m proud of it!
I grew up in LA, in a bubble of a small suburban town, attended a typical highschool, did extra-curricular activities like dancing and playing the violin, graduated, and am now attending UC Berkeley.
I was lucky enough to have wonderful, loving parents (almost too overprotective) and a close sibling. I grew up at a Korean church, had Korean friends, loved Korean pop music and dramas, visited family in Korea, spoke Korean, went to Korean school, etc etc etc..
When I came to college, I had a hard time readjusting but I think I’m perfectly fine now.
Now, I have a Taiwanese boyfriend enlisted in the army, a cute pomeranian puppy named Teddy and a Filipino roommate whom I love and adore like I would a sister.
I still have Korean friends, still listen to Kpop, still visit Korea.. but I’ve expanded my little circle to encompass so much more in life than being Korean. Not to say that being Korean wasn’t enough, but I’ve found a way to be both Korean and an American.
I plan to graduate from Berkeley on time, majoring in Environmental Sciences, and have high hopes to be accepted to an awesome grad school.
I love being Korean and I love being American. I couldn’t have asked to be born any differently.
Thank you to all those at iamkoreanamerican.com for initiating this project, its inspiring and makes me proud to be who I am.
GO BEARS!!!
