As a first generation immigrant living in a city with very little Korean presence at the time, I always had a difficult time finding a role model who I could relate to as well as share career interests with. “Career Day” for me in my ninth grade year consisted of watching a customer trying to use two coupons of the same kind to double his discount at my father’s oil change shop. While I appreciated everything my father’s business provided us, I had other career aspirations for myself. However, due to a lack of role models, the road to my chosen profession was filled with ambivalence and guesswork. Working with my colleagues at Korean Canadian Leadership Development Committee (KCLDC), I realized that there were many others who traveled through the same road; so we initiated the project, “Follow the Leaders.”
“Follow the Leaders” is a project that aims to guide Korean youths in North America into becoming leaders in their chosen future careers by publishing the stories of successful Koreans living in North America in various professions. In this project, we interview accomplished Korean leaders to discover how they became leaders in their respective industries, what they are doing now in their roles as leaders, and their goals that they aim to achieve in the future. Inspiring stories have come from our interviewees such as Senator Paull Shin and Director Min Sook Lee. These interviews are published monthly and can be read on our website. We hope to publish many more of these stories in the future and to provide guidance and direction to the youths in search of their careers. Please support us by visiting our website!
